Tree roots blamed for cracks in the road

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

July 21, 2008

THE SITE: Silver Gate Avenue near Silver Gate Place in San Diego's Point Loma neighborhood.
THE PROBLEM: Just Fix It has been asked to help smooth over some big bumps in the road, but the bumps Sue Ogle brought to our attention are BIG.

A 40-foot-long-by-10-foot-wide section of Silver Gate Avenue near Silver Gate Place in Point Loma is badly cracked, and some sections rise 5 inches above the rest of the street. The culprit appears to be roots from a large tree.

The bumpy section covers the northbound side of the street. Most people who live in the area know to drive around the section, even if it means driving on the wrong side of the street. As for drivers unfamiliar with the bumps, “I hear them bottoming out,” Ogle said.

She and her husband starting contacting the San Diego Street Division last fall via its Web site. Ogle said neighbors starting calling and writing the city earlier than that.

STATUS: Hasan Yousef, the city Street Division's deputy director, said the street will be repaired by the end of this month.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Hasan Yousef, who can be reached at (619) 527-7504 or hyousef@sandiego.gov. The Street Division can be contacted at (619) 527-7500. We recommend asking for a service request number. Requests also can be filed online at apps.sandiego.gov/streetdiv.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Whether it's a missing bus bench or an unkempt park anywhere in San Diego County, Just Fix It might be able to help.

Complaint forms are at justfixit.uniontrib.com, or call (800) 820-8714.
