Boardwalk speed-limit signs are on the way

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

August 4, 2008

THE SITE: Mission Beach boardwalk
THE PROBLEM: It was a dream assignment for a stunning summer day: Walk along the Mission Beach boardwalk and count the speed-limit signs for cyclists and skaters.

Terry Teudt said most of the 8 mph signs along the low wall that separates the boardwalk from the beach north of the Belmont Park roller coaster were either painted over or faded. South of the roller coaster was a different story, Teudt said. There is ample signage.

We took a 20-minute stroll north from the coaster and counted four signs. Going south for 20 minutes, we saw 30 signs, most where small side streets meet the boardwalk.

Teudt said he had complained to San Diego Park and Recreation and the Street Division. With more families flocking to the beach because of the alcohol ban, Teudt said the signs are needed to keep cyclists and skaters from going too fast.

While enforcing the speed limit may not be a high priority, the signs at least warn people to slow down, Teudt said. He knows the potential danger firsthand. Years ago, he was hit by a speeding cyclist and shattered his arm.

STATUS: We thought this would be a job for Park and Recreation.

But as with so many problems in the city, it falls to the Street Division. Hasan Yousef, the division's deputy director, said fresh signs will be added as soon as possible and certainly within 30 days.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Hasan Yousef, who can be reached at (619) 527-7504 or hyousef@sandiego.gov.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Whether it's a missing bus bench or an unkempt park anywhere in San Diego County, Just Fix It might be able to help.

Complaint forms are at just fixit.uniontrib.com, or call (800) 820-8714.
