THE PROBLEM: Laura Lusk believes in exercising her right to vote, but only once – not twice as she could have for the past few years.
Lusk, who lives in Chula Vista, has been listed on voting rolls twice, once – correctly – as a Democrat and once as a nonpartisan. She receives two sample ballots, and her name appears twice on her polling place roster. She said she talked to the county Registrar of Voters' office and poll workers, but got nowhere.
Her real registration includes her middle initial and birth date. The incorrect one does not have her middle initial, and her birth date is wrong. “At least I'm not registered as a Republican,” Lusk said.
She called Just Fix It after receiving two inquiries about applying for an absentee ballot.
STATUS: Registrar of Voters Deborah Seiler quickly fixed the problem last week. Seiler said it appears a petition circulator turned in a second registration in Lusk's name in 2006. There were enough differences between the two registrations that the registrar's staff thought it was legitimate. She said someone should have helped Lusk when she brought the problem to light.
Seiler said too much time has passed to try to track down the petition circulator. Problems with registration should be reported at (858) 565-5800. Seiler said to ask for a supervisor if your initial request is not taken care of.

STILL WAITING: The Caltrans Park and Ride lot in El Cajon is still closed. As we wrote in June, the lot on East Washington Street near Jamacha Road closed last year for resurfacing.
The work was supposed to be done by a developer who bought the lot and adjacent land where it is building homes. But the developer, Shoreline Communities, encountered financial problems and stopped the work.
Soon after we first wrote about the problem, work on the parking lot restarted. But it has stopped again.
Caltrans officials said they are going after a performance bond that the developer had to post and will use it to complete the work.
WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Chris Schmidt, a Caltrans senior planner, who can be reached at (619) 688-6670 or chris.schmidt@dot.ca.gov.
