Crews clear weeds along Governor Drive; street, sidewalk to be repaired

UNION-TRIBUNE Staff Writer

August 13, 2008

Today we look at three problems that have one thing in common: geography.

THE SITE: Governor Drive near Gullstrand Street in University City.
THE PROBLEMS: Walking along the north side of Governor Drive near Gullstrand Street in University City has been a tight squeeze.

Ice plant and tall weeds are taking over the sidewalk. James Stiens said he called San Diego's Street Division in early June and was told something would be done.

Nearby, Nancy Howe said she had contacted the Street Division in early May about two sections of Raya Way where the asphalt is badly deteriorated. Someone spray painted markings in mid-June, but the asphalt just keeps getting worse.

On Genesee Avenue south of Governor, a large section of sidewalk on the east side is severely buckled. There's a bus stop nearby so the sidewalk is heavily used, Mary Banton said. A section of the bike lane is also quite uneven.

Banton said she called the Street Division several months ago. There arespray-paint markings indicating that someone from the city had come out to look at the problem.

STATUS: Walking along Governor is much easier. The Water Department was responsible for the cleanup, said Hasan Yousef, the Street Division's deputy director.

The deteriorated sections of Raya Way should be repaired by week's end, Yousef said.

The bike lane upheaval has been caused by tree roots. Yousef said the roots will be ground down and the asphalt replaced within 60 days.

The worst sections of sidewalk will be replaced by May. Slightly raised sections will be shaved down within two weeks.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Hasan Yousef, who can be reached at (619) 527-7504 or hyousef@sandiego.gov. The Street Division can be contacted at (619) 527-7500. We recommend asking for a service request number. Requests also can be filed online at apps.sandiego.gov/streetdiv

UPDATE: The utility trailer we wrote about Friday that had been sitting for weeks on El Cerrito Drive, not far from El Cajon Boulevard, was moved Friday morning onto a nearby church property.

The old truck that had been sitting on Paseo Lucido in Rancho Bernardo for three months also was moved Friday morning. But it was just relocated across the street.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: San Diego police Lt. Tim Saelens, who can be reached at (858) 495-7800 or tsaelens@pd.sandiego.gov.
