When the threat of fire reaches bright red, SDG&E will launch a pre-emptive retreat from the backcountry.
A native San Diegan, Jenkins is a third-generation newspaperman with more than 20 years of experience. He has served as the editor of the La Jolla Light and city editor of the Times Advocate in Escondido.
Before going into journalism in his early 30s, Jenkins taught several years at San Diego State University. He earned a doctoral degree in English literature from the University of British Columbia.
His wife, Renee, is retired from teachng at Francis Parker School. His son, Lee, is a sportswriter for Sports Illustrated.
