SDSU softball team rolls, now has top spot in MWC

The 19th-ranked SDSU softball team beat host Utah 13-3 in five innings yesterday to move into sole possession of first place in the Mountain West Conference.

The Aztecs (27-14, 9-4) had a dozen hits as Erin Floros (Mt. Carmel), Tonye McCorkle and freshman Samantha Beasley (Steele Canyon) all went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Tamani Wells added two hits, scored twice and drove two while Brittany Knudsen (Escondido) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.

In relief of starter Christina Ross, Beasley (7-2) scattered two runs on three hits in three innings, striking out four.

Women's water polo

Senior goalie Kim Hockett made 11 saves to lead UCSD to an 8-6 victory over Sonoma State in a quarterfinal match at the Western Water Polo Association Championships at Loyola Marymount. The third-seeded Tritons (18-16) will play second-seeded LMU today.

Men's golf

The SDSU golf team is in seventh place after the second round of the MWC Championships at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club. The Aztecs shot a 296 for a 36-hole total of 17-over-par 585 at the 7,136-yard, par-71 Catalina Course.

Senior Aaron Goldberg (La Costa Canyon) was in the lead Thursday but struggled yesterday, firing a 4-over 75 to finish the afternoon in a tie for seventh at even-par 142. Goldberg is three shots in back of UNLV's Eddie Olson (-3).

Men's tennis

Sixth-seeded SDSU fell to No. 2 seed New Mexico 4-0 in the semifinals of the MWC championships at TCU.

Baseball

The seventh-ranked UCSD Tritons had a season-high 25 hits in a 16-7 win over host San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. UCSD (37-11, 21-8) tied a school record for single-season wins as seven Tritons recorded multi-hit games, including freshman Evan Kehoe, who was 6-for-7.
