San Diego State's Lorrenzo Wade has withdrawn his name from this year's NBA draft.
Wade declared for the draft last month but did not hire an agent, allowing him to maintain his college eligibility as long as he withdrew from the draft by June 16, 10 days before the draft.
The 6-foot-6 forward, who earned first-team All-Mountain West Conference honors last season, averaged a team-high 14.8 points and 3.6 assists during his junior year.
“One of my biggest things was trying to get into the predraft camp in Orlando next month,” Wade said yesterday. “But there was such a mad rush of underclassmen trying to get into the draft this year, it was just really difficult. I feel like next year (the draft) will be a little more watered down and I'll have a better opportunity. I'm happy to be coming back.”
Local player signs
Coach
Steve Fisher announced that former University City High player
Tim Island has signed with the Aztecs.
Island, a 6-6, 200-pound shooting guard, averaged 16.1 points last season in helping lead Mt. San Jacinto College to the Foothill Conference championship.
Island, who will join an SDSU team that consistently struggled from beyond the three-point line last season, led Mt. San Jacinto with 68 three-point baskets, best among the conference's top 10 scorers.
The second player to have signed with SDSU for next season, Island, who originally attended Long Beach State, will have two years of eligibility remaining.
SDSU has two scholarships remaining. The regular signing period for basketball runs through Wednesday.
The waiting game
Starting forward
Kyle Spain, who was suspended for the final 11 games of the season for unspecified violations of team policy, is enrolled in both sessions of summer school at SDSU, Fisher said.
A decision on whether Spain, who is not listed on the roster, will be allowed to return to the team is not expected until the Aztecs begin workouts in October. He remains on scholarship.
“The potential for him to return is there,” Fisher said.
Davis update
Fisher said senior guard
Kelvin Davis, who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, will undergo the third of 12 chemotherapy treatments tomorrow.
“Kelvin told me he's going to be ready to play in November,” said Fisher, who was with Davis during his second chemotherapy treatment two weeks ago. “The doctors have said that type of attitude is healthy for Kelvin, so I've said, 'Let's go for it.'
“I told him to wait and see how he feels as he goes through the chemotherapy, but he has done remarkably well in terms of how he's dealt with the first two (treatments).”
