Diamondbacks put Eric Byrnes on 15-day DL

PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks put left fielder Eric Byrnes on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring Tuesday.

The move comes eight days after Byrnes came off the DL, where he spent a month with injuries to both hamstrings.

Byrnes hurt his hamstring as he tried to steal third in the second inning of Arizona's 6-3 victory over Milwaukee on Monday night. Byrnes pulled up as he went into his dive, never reached the bag and was thrown out by Jason Kendall.

Arizona manager Bob Melvin said he didn't think Byrnes had come back too soon.

“How he felt, and the feedback we were getting from him, he was healthy enough to come back and felt like healthy enough to play on an everyday basis,” Melvin said.

Byrnes missed 25 games in his last trip to the DL, and Melvin said he fears this stint could be longer.

Conor Jackson, the Diamondbacks' opening day first baseman, will take over in left field for now, with Chad Tracy playing first.

To fill Byrnes' spot on the roster, the Diamondbacks selected the contract of right-hander Connor Robertson from Triple-A Tucson. Robertson appeared in three games for Oakland last year, allowing four runs and six hits in two innings.

Byrnes isn't the only ailing Diamondback.

Catcher Chris Snyder underwent an MRI on Tuesday after being hit in the groin area by a foul tip on Monday night. Melvin said Snyder would be “emergency use” on Tuesday but could be back in the lineup on Wednesday.

Miguel Montero was in the lineup for Arizona's game against Milwaukee on Tuesday night, and Melvin said utilityman Augie Ojeda would be his backup catcher.

Meanwhile, right-hander Micah Owings tested his sore gluteus muscle in a bullpen session on Tuesday afternoon. If the muscle doesn't feel right, Owings may skip his start on Wednesday. He would be replaced by righty Yusmeiro Petit, Melvin said.
