Rockies place Francis on 15-day DL

ASSOCIATED PRESS

DENVER – Jeff Francis went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with shoulder inflammation, leaving the Colorado Rockies without their opening-day starter.

Francis felt soreness in his left shoulder during a bullpen session on Tuesday. He had an MRI on Wednesday, and the Rockies put him on the DL to let his arm rest.

“We think it's the best thing for him,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “It gives him rest and a chance to be 100 percent healthy the next time he goes out there and actually work on a couple of things.”

The Rockies recalled left-hander Mark Redman from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take Francis' roster spot.

Francis went 17-9 with a 4.22 ERA last season. The left-hander started Game 1 of the National League division series, the NL championship series and the World Series, but has struggled this year, going 3-7 with a 5.67 ERA in 17 starts.

“He's been suffering from an inconsistent arm slot since opening day,” Hurdle said. “I don't think he's felt the inflammation since then, but it's become more a part of the problem.”

Redman began the season with the Rockies, going 2-3 with a 7.84 ERA in six starts. The 34-year-old was moved to the bullpen on May 7 and sent to Triple A on May 11, where he was 5-2 with a 4.64 ERA in nine starts.
