NICK CANEPA: Yes, the Chargers are underachieving this season. But it's not all the fault of the coach, and to jettison him at this stage would be unfair -- and foolish.

Q:
Acee -- You, Sullivan and Canepa are all making virtually the same argument: the Chargers disappointed this year primarily due to injuries and the PLAYERS' underachieving / being overrated. Why has the team seemingly gotten worse over the past 4 games while simultaneously getting healthier? Why is the roster so overrated this year when virtually the same roster took the team to division titles 3 of the last 4 seasons??
- -- Dave Stein, San Diego

A:
I really am trying to find deeper answers. You need a little patience on that. I don't have the luxury of just firing off the top of my head in stories (no offense). You ask valid questions, but I think we are all overlooking the fact that SIX key players entered the season with a serious injury or suffered one in the first game. Talk all you want about the Giants losing Umenyiora or the Patriots losing Brady. The Chargers lost Shawne Merriman for the season, began the season without Nick Hardwick and Marcus McNeill and have had Cromartie, Gates and LT playing significant chunks of the season with serious injuries. Yes, good teams overcome injuries. But, heck, there is a limit, right? But I guess it's all Norv's fault.

The Colts are where the Bolts would like to be. And it's not just that 6-4 record, which in the South does not get Indy any closer than four games out of first.

TIM SULLIVAN: The Chargers are essentially the same team that played for a shot at the Super Bowl last January. But not exactly. Their roster is replete with Pro Bowl players, but the core is less solid than it was last season, or in 2006.
