Countdown to camp: Linebackers

Union-Tribune
Twice-a-week slide shows, narrated by Chargers beat writer Kevin Acee, will detail who will fill key spots on the 2008 team. The third installment is on the linebackers, The Chargers will have to do without starter Stephen Cooper for the first month of the season. In April, Cooper was suspended for four months by the NFL for a positive drug test. Look for new slide shows each Tuesday and Thursday.

Foley settles his lawsuit vs. cop, Coronado

Former Chargers linebacker, city seek to keep terms of deal sealed

On the day former Chargers linebacker Steve Foley was to testify about his career-ending encounter with an off-duty police officer in 2006, he was summoned to the judge's chambers instead.

Visibly upset, pacing the courtroom and glaring at Coronado Officer Aaron Mansker, Foley was finally coaxed by his mother Wednesday to follow the attorneys behind the bench.

QUOTABLE
“I believe Mr. Foley should be compensated for what he went through. It pretty much ended his career and he's a great football player.”
– Randy McClellan, an alternate juror in former Chargers linebacker Steve Foley's lawsuit against Officer Steve Mansker and the city of Coronado
Signing of Jones could signal Parker's departure: The signing of Mark Jones on Friday is not a big deal in and of itself. Jones, a receiver and punt returner, faces a major challenge making the Chargers' opening day roster.

Players wrap up their NFL baptism: During a team session this week, with the offense going against the defense, Chargers head coach Norv Turner ordered Paul Oliver to the sideline.

Ex-Charger gets hearing before trial: Lawyers for former Chargers linebacker Steve Foley say the Coronado police officer who shot him was immature, and was on a personal “crusade” against drunken drivers, which led him follow several motorists while off duty, according to court documents.

Chargers-linked doctors settle suit: Current and former Chargers team doctors David Chao and Paul Murphy have settled their expensive legal battle against each other, resolving an ugly dispute that cost Chao more than $1 million and disrupted their shared practice in June 2005.

Chargers sign Newberry to one-year deal: The Chargers signed center Jeremy Newberry to a one-year contract yesterday, adding depth at a position at which they might have a desperate need.

Chargers settle with ticket holder: A season ticket holder who sued the Chargers last year over their playoff refund policy has reached an undisclosed settlement with the team.

Chargers sign free agent center Newberry: The Chargers signed center Jeremy Newberry to a one-year contract Monday, adding depth at a position at which they may have a desperate need.

British voracious about Chargers tickets: Five months before the Saints and Chargers kick off at Wembley Stadium, tickets already are going fast.

Chargers scold Sanders' camp: SAN DIEGO – The Chargers took issue yesterday with San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders for daring to suggest that the football team supports his chief re-election challenger, Steve Francis.

Don't look for Taylor dancing with the Chargers: Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor has passed word through friends that he wants to play for the Chargers.

Miami's Taylor may like Bolts, but the feeling's not mutual: Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor has passed word through friends that he wants to play for the Chargers.

Bolts' Osgood no-show for offseason session: The Chargers began offseason coaching sessions yesterday, and everyone was present except three players who primarily contribute on special teams.

Binn, Chargers agree on deal: Long snapper David Binn, who has played in more games than anyone in franchise history, yesterday agreed to terms with the Chargers on a four-year contract through 2011.

Keeping Chargers' top talent a tall task: As the Chargers prepare to begin negotiations in earnest with several of their star players, both sides will be dealing with an uncertainty looming over the talks.

Work to do: The Chargers, so good over the past four years at signing their own players to extensions, have 14 players who will become unrestricted free agents over the next three years.

A mother's scare and her son's devotion: Cassandra Gardner did not see her son's NFL-record 109-yard return of a field goal at Minnesota this past Nov. 4.

Gordon ready for a Cason challenge: “First round is to come in and play,” Gordon said yesterday. But judging by his weekend, Gordon clearly is not going to step aside simply because the Chargers took cornerback Antoine Cason in the first round of the draft.

Bolts, coach sharing the same script: Continuity. It was the Chargers' front office's explanation and became the players' catch phrase.

Hester displays his inner player: That's Jacob Hester? That's the guy for whom the Chargers gave up next year's second-round pick and a fifth-rounder this year?

USD's Bakhtiari made good first impression:Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith went to USD's game against Drake in October to observe celebrated Toreros quarterback Josh Johnson.

'Beat up' Bolts on healing path: After the team's most visible stars, LaDainian Tomlinson and Philip Rivers, showed their injured knees are well on the way to being mended, four other starters (plus not-to-be-forgotten Eric Parker) emerged into daylight from the training room only at the end of yesterday's morning practice.

Gates hires Condon as his agent: The Chargers have been exceptionally adept at getting deals done to retain their players, but their current situation keeps getting more intriguing.

Playing catch-up: The Chargers hold a three-day minicamp today through Sunday. Quarterback Philip Rivers will be among many starters whose participation is limited, but he will throw some and by all accounts is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation from his Jan. 23 surgery to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament in his right leg.

Nix has no plans, except to play golf: Numerous NFL insiders said in the past couple of days that there will be work in a personnel department somewhere for Buddy Nix. And those who know him say he has for a few years desired to be a general manager.

Chargers' top scout Buddy Nix, 68, retires: A short while after the Chargers completed their draft Sunday afternoon, Assistant General Manager Buddy Nix informed General Manager A.J. Smith he was retiring.

Chargers secure veteran tackle: two contingencies, actually – and yesterday it came to fruition. The Chargers, unable to acquire an elite offensive tackle in the draft, agreed to terms with veteran L.J. Shelton on a two-year deal.

Chargers Assistant GM Nix suddenly gone: Chargers Assistant General Manager Buddy Nix is no longer with the team, the team confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

Aztec, Torero among new Chargers signed: San Diego State guard Brandyn Dombrowski and USD outside linebacker Eric Bakhtiari were the locals signed. The Chargers don't have big needs at those positions. Not that they have pressing needs anywhere.

Chargers bulk uo O-line by signing Shelton: Unable to get their right tackle of the future in last weekend's NFL Draft, the Chargers got a backup for now.

On draft day, NFL's GMs played 'deal or no deal': Let's get into the mathematics. Of the 252 selections in the NFL draft, 32 were compensatory picks, which cannot be traded. That leaves 220. Are we going too fast?

Chargers free agents :

Chargers find a back, still seeking a tackle: After a day on which they boldly traded to get the backup running back they desired, the Chargers are left still searching for offensive tackle depth.
