SAN DIEGO: Jon Maddern, who played a key role in preparing San Diego for the recent U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course, has been appointed manager of golf operations.
He will also hold the title as deputy director of the Golf Division in the Park and Recreation Department. His job includes overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Balboa Park, Mission Bay and Torrey Pines golf courses, as well as coordinating major tournaments, such as the annual Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines.
Maddern joined the city last year as assistant deputy director for the Golf Division. He has more than 28 years of experience in the golf industry, including managing courses in California and Michigan.
He's a certified golf course superintendent and has a Certificate in Turfgrass Management from Michigan State University.
Maddern replaces former Deputy Director Mark Woodward, who has taken a new job in Kansas. Woodward was paid $120,000 a year, and Maddern $111,000. Maddern will now be paid $120,000. –H.G.
