BARRINGTON, R.I. – Camilo Villegas made two birdie putts in a three-hole playoff and along with his partner Bubba Watson won the rain-delayed CVS Caremark Charity Classic on Tuesday.

Villegas-Watson finished with a three-hole total of 3-under par and split the $300,000 first-place check in the best-ball tournament. The team of Paul Goydos-Tim Herron came in second and Rocco Mediate and Brandt Snedeker were third.

Play was halted at 12:10 p.m. when thunderstorms and hail swept through the area and forced golfers and spectators off the course.

Several fairways were flooded, bunkers were eroded or completely flooded and a few suites suffered damage to their roofs.

After a delay of nearly four hours, tournament officials decided that a three-hole playoff would be held between the four teams that were tied for the lead through 28 total holes.

The teams were Watson-Villegas, Billy Andrade-Davis Love III, Mediate-Snedeker and Goydos-Herron. They were tied for first place at 15-under par when rain halted play. They played the 16th, 17th and 18th holes.

On Monday, “we came in and made par on the last three holes and I told Bubba, 'Let's make three birds (in the playoff),'” Villegas said. “Fortunately, I made bird on the first two holes and Bubba made bird on the third.”

Villegas, a native of Colombia who graduated from the University of Florida, dropped his approach shot to the par-4, 401-yard 16th hole 2 feet from the cup and tapped in for bird.

Mediate, who lost to Tiger Woods in a playoff for the U.S. Open, canned a 10-foot birdie putt on 16.

Villegas put his team ahead for good on the par-3, 145-yard 17th even though his tee shot landed on the back fringe of the green. He rolled in a 15-footer for a one-stroke lead.

Watson capped the victory by holing out a 3-foot putt for bird on the par-4, 398-yard 18th hole.

“Despite all the rain, the last three holes were great,” Watson said. “Besides, you play in the rain and in the puddles. Crowds like to see that.”

Andrade and Herron accounted for the only two eagles in the second round, each of which came on the par-5, 516-yard 8th hole.
