LAS VEGAS – Oakland Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker was “quickly recovering” following hospitalization for a concussion and facial injuries after a Las Vegas robbery, Walker's agent said Wednesday.
The agent, Kennard McGuire, issued a prepared statement thanking people for prayers and support for Walker, who McGuire said was “recovering in a private environment.” An aide to McGuire, of MS World in Richmond, Texas, declined to say where Walker was staying.
“Javon looks forward to getting back to his family and teammates,” the statement said, “and is looking forward to the start of the upcoming season.”
Walker was found beaten and unconscious early Monday on a street near the Las Vegas Strip, police said, after a night spent at a nightclub during which he was photographed spraying the crowd with champagne.
Police Lt. Clinton Nichols said a large amount of cash and some jewelry were taken from Walker, who suffered what police called a moderate concussion and “significant” facial injuries.
Nichols said Tuesday that detectives planned to interview Walker before his release from the hospital about his activities in the hours before he was robbed. Nichols did not immediately return messages left Wednesday.
Walker spent Sunday night partying at Body English, a club at the Hard Rock hotel-casino, and left about 3:30 a.m. Monday, according to a casino spokeswoman. She said there were no reports of a disturbance at the club.
A Raiders spokesman said the team was in the process of gathering information and had no further comment.
Walker, 29, signed a six-year, $55 million deal with the Raiders after being released by the Denver Broncos in February.
Walker sought a fresh start after Broncos teammate Darrent Williams died in his arms in the back of a limousine on New Year's Day 2007 in downtown Denver.
In a 2007 “Real Sports” interview, Walker said then teammate Brandon Marshall and his cousin exchanged heated words with two men who later confronted Williams and his group after taking offense when Marshall sprayed them with champagne.
Walker was a first-round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2001. He had 89 catches in 2004 for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns, but tore a knee ligament the next season and played only one game.
He was traded in 2006 to Denver, where he had with 69 catches for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns. A second injury to his right knee last season limited him to eight games and 26 catches.
