Watercraft ban pits surfers, environmentalists

One of the surf world's most contentious debates came to a head a week ago, as federal officials decided to disallow tow-in surfing within the boundaries of three Central California marine sanctuaries.

The ban pitted big-wave surfers, who use personalized watercraft (or PWCs) to propel themselves into waves that are too large to be caught by paddling a board, against environmental groups who believe the motorized vehicles have no place in a marine sanctuary.

Entries down, but Baja 1000 field one of largest: Despite what is going on in Baja California these days and the incidents on the fringe of the Baja 1000 last November, the race will go on. SCORE wouldn't be SCORE without the Baja 1000 as its Super Bowl, which is why close to 400 racing teams are in Ensenada this week for the 41st running of the toughest single-day test in motorsports.

Paying tolls beats flying for Michaels:Never has someone been so eager to pay a $4.50 highway toll. Vasgersian back to Q before leaving town:It will be just like old times Sunday for Matt Vasgersian, broadcasting a game from Qualcomm Stadium involving a crummy local team. “That's horrible,” Vasgersian said when I suggested that the other day. Hey, why not go out the way he came in?

'Embarrassed' GM isn't biting on coach questions: A.J. Smith normally is in a good mood during our quarterly sessions. Not this quarter. The Chargers general manager yesterday morning was looking and talking very much like a miserable GM responsible for a miserable 4-8 NFL team.

Turner is here for the duration, – at least for now: The head coach has been addressed. End of story. Close of subject. Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith's abrupt answers to pointed questions about Norv Turner may not be what you want to hear, but they're about all you're likely to get.

Take 'The Express' with a grain of salt: “Express”-ly speaking, the Ernie Davis story is a great one for the movies, and the just-released “The Express” does a good job bringing it to the big screen.
