San Diego, El Camino triumph in first round

San Diego and El Camino opened the Southern California Regional Division I boys basketball playoffs with victories last night.

The Cavers, playing at home as champions of the San Diego Section, defeated Hemet West Valley 76-64.

The Wildcats, on the road as section runners-up, defeated Clovis East 89-64.

Senior Patrick McCollom scored 22 points to lead San Diego (23-4), which trailed 36-30 at halftime. The Cavers outscored West Valley by 18 points in the second half.

Senior James Tyler had 20 points for San Diego, and 6-foot-11 sophomore Jeremy Tyler added 19.

Junior Luke Evans exploded for 30 points to lead El Camino (29-3). The Wildcats trailed by five at the end of the first quarter but rebounded for a 43-36 halftime lead.

Nelson Rosario contributed 16 points for El Camino, and Thomas Wright added 14.

In tonight's quarterfinals, San Diego plays at Compton Dominguez and El Camino plays at Woodland Hills Taft. Both games start at 7 p.m.

In Division V boys, Maranatha Christian jumped to an early lead before losing to host Laverne Lutheran 71-57. Santiago Simental scored 23 for Maranatha, which led by six at the end of the first quarter but trailed by two at halftime. Freshman Chen Cai was held to 12 for the Eagles (21-8).

Girls

Poway led by two at the half before dropping a 58-41 decision to visiting San Clemente in Division I. The Titans (27-4) were outscored 22-1 in the third quarter by the Tritons, who in January recorded a 44-43 win over La Jolla Country Day, the top-ranked team in the San Diego Section.

Bonita Vista (22-8) dropped a 74-27 decision to top-seeded Long Beach Poly in Division I.

Escondido Adventist, playing at Calvin Christian, scored a 51-26 win over Redlands Packing House Christian Academy in Division V. Jenny Buchheim led the Hawks with 12 points. In tonight's quarterfinals, Escondido Adventist (24-4) plays at San Luis Obispo Mission Prep at 7 p.m.
