UNION-TRIBUNE

June 19, 2008

The Alex Spanos All-Star Football Classic, featuring last season's top high school seniors, will be played at 7:30 p.m. July 11 at Mt. Carmel High.

The game will pit a team of North County players against a South squad made up of athletes from East County, South County and City Conference schools.

Poway's Damian Gonzalez will coach the North. Eastlake's John McFadden will coach the South.

Girls hoop tournament features 300+ teams

The San Diego Classic high school girls basketball tournament is scheduled July 17-20.

Competition is expected to feature more than 300 teams in four divisions playing at sites across the region. The tournament, the largest of its kind in the nation, is in its 22nd year and includes many of the top teams in the Western states.

The girls must attend the high school they represent. There are no all-star or club teams entered.

The tournament schedule has not been finalized, but the championship games are set for the final day at the University of California San Diego's RIMAC Arena. Visit sandiegoclassic.com for more information.

Coaching honors

Grossmont High's Rob Phillips has been named State Baseball Coach of the Year by CalHiSports.com. Phillips guided the Foothillers to an unprecedented fourth consecutive San Diego Section Division II championship this season.

Phillips stepped down after the season. He directed Grossmont to six section titles in his 12 years at the helm. Phillips is the fifth section coach in the past 20 years to receive the state honor.

Rios sisters

Sisters Shandis and Tina Rios of Grossmont High will be playing basketball against one another at the college level next season. The sibling rivalry will be renewed when Shandis' Chapman University Panthers take on Tina's Redlands Bulldogs.

The sisters were teammates in 2006-07 when the Foothillers captured the school's first Grossmont North League girls basketball title. Shandis, a year older than Tina, played at Southwestern College last season as a freshman. Both girls are solid three-point shooters and tenacious defenders.

The next step

FOOTBALL: Grossmont's Khalid Waters, NAIA Midland Lutheran.

BASEBALL: Grossmont's Charlie Piro, Division III Chapman University.
