Pirates overcome gaffes

Defending champs hold on in ugly win

TODAY'S LOCAL NEWS

September 6, 2008

Oceanside quarterback Jordan Wynn had what he called a lengthy offseason.

Oceanside's Rene Siluano scores after Eastlake's Daniel Johnson fails to bring him down on the Pirates' first drive.
Not only did Wynn have to maintain his routine to keep fit in preparation for his senior season, but he had to figure out his future, choosing to commit to play next year at the University of Colorado.

Add the responsibilities of familiarizing himself with a mostly new cast of offensive players, and Wynn probably couldn't wait for the season opener.

It came last night. And Wynn began the season with what he's become accustomed to doing: win.

But it wasn't pretty.

The San Diego Section champion Pirates held on to a 26-23 nonleague win against host Eastlake.

Oceanside didn't look like the Oceanside that cruised to a fourth straight San Diego Section title, including the county's first state bowl win last year.

The Pirates finished with six fumbles, including four botched exchanges from center to quarterback.

A team that usually avoids committing infractions finished with 15 penalties. Two of them were personal fouls.

“We played terrible,” said Oceanside coach John Carroll to his team during a post-game huddle. “This is a loss in every single way except on the scoreboard. Pretty or not, we're 1-0.”

It looked as if things would go smoothly for the Pirates as they jumped out to a 13-0 lead seven minutes into the game.

But Oceanside mistakes kept the Titans (0-1) close.

The Pirates went into halftime with a 26-17 lead with scores from Rene Siluano (6-yard TD run), Bashiri Washington (4-yard fumble return), Jake Fely (2-yard TD run), and J.J. Whitaker (17-yard pass from Wynn).

The Pirates could have put the game away with 2:47 left, but Wynn fumbled a snap at the Titans' 1-yard line. Eastlake recovered in the end zone for a touchback.

“I'll take the blame for those,” said Wynn, who completed 17-of-30 passes for 280 yards and one touchdown against a young Titans defense. “That's not the way I wanted to start my senior year. That's the only good thing, the 1-0 (record). I thought we kind of had this, especially after what we did in the first half. I thought we were going to come out here and put 50 (points) in the second half.”

The Titans made it a three-point game late when Tony Jefferson returned a shanked punt 18-yards for a score. Randall Williams ran and caught a pass for a touchdown in the first half. Kris Almario added a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter to bring the Titans again within three.
