Yesterday was Westview quarterback Tommy Hansen's 17th birthday.
And during the beginning of Friday night's game against Francis Parker it didn't look like it was going to be much celebrated when Francis Parker took a 17-0 lead.
But Hansen (15-30, 233-yards) ended up with a nice surprise present when his Wolverines produced a 27-24 victory on Bobby Wenzig's 47-yard field goal with 6:40 left in the game making the difference.
Perhaps a bit of birthday luck was on Hansen's side with 15 seconds left in the first half when he sent a lateral bouncing to wide receiver Steven Sousa who passed to Luke Burcher at the goal line for a 49-yard score. The touchdown brought the Wolverines to within 17-14.
“We only ran that play twice in practices and the last time we ran it I screwed it up, so I was a little nervous when coach called it,” said Sousa. “I tried not to think about what would happen because thinking can get you in trouble.”
Westview showed some early first-game jitters but the Division II school began to wear down the Division V opponent that was playing multiple starters on both sides of the ball. With 3:55 remaining in the second quarter, Tyler Musco scored on a 57-yard run on the first play of a drive to make it 17-7.
“We talked all week about our key trait being our confidence,” said Westview coach Mike Woodward. “How ironic it is that confidence is what we needed the entire night.”
Francis Parker's quick start was led by quarterback Deon Randall (79 rushing yards, 140 passing) when he found wide receiver Myles Muagututia for a 4-yard touchdown in the back right corner of the end zone. Randall made it 14-0 with an 11-yard run to the left side and later, kicker Matt Wile knocked in a field goal from 44-yards.
Westview tied the game at 24 when Mitchell Bartolo scored on a 6-yard run with 8:31 to go. The score was set up by an interception by Matt Tyree in Francis Parker territory.
Two Lancers turnovers late in the game ended up being the difference. With 8:32 left Westview's Alex Leavitt recovered a fumble which set up the game-winning field goal.
“Our offense wasn't giving many opportunities early on, but our defense kept us in it at the end,” said Hansen. “We were just a bit nervous coming in.”
