Junior-to-be has two years left to settle on major and a position

Mission Bay High's Dillon Baxter has gone to two summer football camps at USC.

He knows the facilities. He's seen the Heisman trophies in Heritage Hall. He's noted the Trojans' success, especially when Reggie Bush was helping produce national championships.

More than 300 teams expected at basketball tourney: The San Diego Classic high school girls basketball tournament is scheduled July 17-20. Competition is expected to feature more than 300 teams in four divisions playing at sites across the region. The tournament, the largest of its kind in the nation, is in its 22nd year and includes many of the top teams in the Western states.

Cerda's homer powers Oceanside over Westview: Westview head coach Beau Champoux had good reason for intentionally walking Matt Cerda twice Wednesday. The Oceanside slugger shed light on Champoux's motivation in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Pitching, defense power LC Canyon: Max MacNabb's impact on the La Costa Canyon High baseball team figured to be a year away. Up until about a week ago, the sophomore left-hander had pitched only 10 innings. Most of that came during early-season tournaments.

Parker withstands St. Augustine rally: As the final spike by St. Augustine flew past the end line, Francis Parker coach John Herman breathed a sigh of relief. The third-seeded Saints had given his No. 1 Lancers everything they could handle.

Helix upsets Escondido in softball: Alyssa Dronenburg's first-inning home run sparked Helix to a 1-0 upset over top-seeded Escondido yesterday in the San Diego Section Division I softball quarterfinals.

One and done: The Mission Hills baseball team won its season series with Mt. Carmel, two games to one. Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, the one game they lost to the Sundevils was by far the most crucial.

Westview hitters alive for playoffs: For a team not known for clubbing opponents with its bats, Westview rode a hitting wave to an early knockout in yesterday's section Division II play-in game against visiting Serra.

Old rivalry will receive new twist: Vista center fielder Courtney Ware watched El Camino catcher Chelsea Troupe blast a home run yesterday. It was a familiar sight for Ware. She had seen Troupe cause chaos for the visiting Panthers plenty of times.
